Father O'Brien attended Saint John's Seminary and was ordained a priest in 1957. He was appointed to high school work five years later, received an M.A. in English from Loyola Marymount University and an Ed.D. from USC. He was a high-school teacher and administrator for sixteen years when Mount St. Mary's in 1978 invited him to join the college community. Father O'Brien teaches Freshman English and speech-communication courses. His chief delights are to help students improve their writing and to help them overcome their fear of giving speeches. He also teaches literature and he has had the opportunity to design and teach a number of literature courses new to the college, like Fiction to Film, Mythmaking: the Quest for Meaning, and California Authors. He is interested in journalism and how well the media reports what happens in the world. He developed a course a few years ago called The News Media and later spent a sabbatical studying new reporting, mostly attending classes at UCLA, but also observing in newsrooms across the country. He is excited to be part of Mount St. Mary's College.
