Announcements for February 8-9

Bring in Your Blessed Palms

Lent will be here before you know it! It’s time to collect our palms from past Palm Sundays and bring them to the church so they can be burned for our Ash Wednesday ashes. In this way we take a symbol of celebration and burn it to create a symbol of repentance. This weekend, February 9-10, baskets will be placed on the altar steps for your old palms. There you are invited to join us after the 5:30 p.m. Mass on February 10 for a brief ceremony to burn the palms. These are the ashes we will use on the following Wednesday, February 13, Ash Wednesday.

RCIA News

On Saturday, February 16th during the 5:30 Mass, our catechumens and candidates will take part in the Rite of Election. This means that they say, “Yes” again to follow the call and way of Jesus. On the testimony of their godparents, the catechists, you their parish family, decide they are ready for the Sacraments of Initiation. From this day forward they will be called “The Elect” and will write their name in the book of Election. On Sunday, they will join all the parishes of the Archdiocese at the Cathedral for a ceremony with Archbishop Jose Gomez. Please continue to pray for them during this Lenten period.

Children’s Liturgy Of The Word Comes To Good Shepherd!

“Let the children come to me and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matt 19:14) As we begin 2013 and celebrating the Year of Faith, we are proud to announce the start-up of the Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLW) at Good Shepherd. This will be held every Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. Mass, beginning on Sunday, February 17. This is for children in Kindergarten – 3rd Grade. CLW is designed for the children to encounter the Word of God at their level of understanding. As each child is created in God’s image, he or she will have the opportunity to develop a personal relationship – an Encounter – with Jesus Christ through the Gospel. During the Mass, the priest will invite the children to come up to the front of the altar, and the catechist(s) will be ushering the children outside and through the parish hall, into the designated room prepared for the children’s liturgy. Once the session concludes, the catechist(s) will be assisting the children back into the church to join their family members, and continue celebrating Mass. Please be advised that the children’s dismissal is NOT a discontinuing or an interruption of Mass, but a continuum of the celebration of the whole Liturgy that constitute the “Mass”. For more information and/or if you would like to volunteer, please contact Wendy Rappe at (310) 285-5425.

Schedule for the Bible Study Group

We are studying the spirituality of each Gospel (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), and the lives of two saints (or other notable Christians) who have lived out that spirituality. We meet in the Parish Center every other week on Saturday from 10 a.m. – 12 noon, with a repeat on the following Monday from 7 – 9 p.m. The upcoming meetings include: February 11, February 23 & 25, and March 9 & 11. Everyone is welcome to join. For more information or to obtain the study materials before the next session, please contact John at (310) 285-5425, or jpalmer@goodshepherdbh.org.
